Nuevo de Mexico: Summer 2014

The most interesting of journey’s.

This must mark the 1st EVER time I was in NM and didn’t have something specific to train for.

Just to have fun, work out a little bit, entertain, and what we called “The List”.

2014 Pepe's Surgery

One of the main goals of this trip was to figure out why Pepe had been lame for almost a year.  It turns out he had to have his Superficial Digitorum Flexor Tendon re-attached.

We also had to fix a slab leak, which we decided to replace all of the plumbing and put it into the walls, which took more than 2 weeks of 8 to 10 hours a day.  Those plumbers sure do work hard on big jobs.

It was taxing on all parties involved.

So outside of the obvious responsibilities I was hoping to have a solid build to 5 hours on the bike, and up to 20 miles for a Leadville 100 pace run.  Non of that happened.

It wasn’t do or die since my season was over with Chicago, and I was transitioning on to whatever else the year would bring me.

I did manage to perfect The One Hit Wonder .

I got to have a lot of great times with some friends and the girls.  The whole trip was nice even with the ball and chain plumbers crimping my style.

Dave Robison stopped with his daughter on the way to California, the girls hiked up the South Foothills and then, went to the pool, while I gave Dave a tour of the South Foothills with my friend Rose.  Rose departed and I took Dave down to the Agave.  Because everybody has to make it to the Agave, one time.

2014 Dave at Agave

2014 Sharon at White MesaSharon came over too!  We got up really early so we could ride the White Mesa.  She checked out the Zoefitness One Hit Wonder, and then, suffered through a great deal of the Watermelon Beatdown.  All of the single track up the back side of the mountain.

She toughed it out all the way to King of the Mountain, and it’s to my advantage that she has a bone to pick with the Watermelon.  That means she’ll be back for a visit!

2014 Sharona and Zoe We have a long way to go! 2014 Sharon with Ortiz MTNs in back ground

2014 Girls at top of Tram

2014 View From Tram

Since we didn’t make it all the way to the Tram via single track, we took the Tram and had dinner at the top.  Brr, it’s cold up there, even in the dead of summer.  🙂

2014 Girls 3 Rivers Petroglyphs“The List” was very long and some of the items on the list were Petroglyph’s, we stopped at 3 Rivers Petroglyph on the way down to White Sands.

2014 White Sands

On the way home from White Sands we HAD to stop at the World’s Largest Pistachio:

2014 Worlds Largest PistachioWe, of course, bought some pistachios, but also, we bought some of the tastiest pecans I have ever had, I can’t wait to eat more of those.

They were like Pecan Pie without the Pie.

On the list was Luna Mansion a house that was turned into a restaurant.  This house is said to be haunted.  This is one of the creepy parts of the house:

2014 Luna MansionThe workers had plenty of stories, we have none.  Other than the fact, I felt a presence there, in one area of the house so much so that after the lights had been turned out , I couldn’t enter it.  I’m really into haunted stories, and resonating spirits.

2014 Stef's Zoefitness ButtStefanie is the person I got to see the most while I was there.  On the last day I brought back the bike Sharon borrowed and did a quickie up there in Santa Fe at Tierra.  That place is nice, and feeds my weakness, trees and flow.

We raced back to MN, uneventful drive thank God, to arrive in time to see a Katy Perry concert:

2014 Katy PerryBest concert I have ever seen.  I have seen a lot of concerts.  She provided so much entertainment outside of her songs, it really knocks her up on the list for overall talent.  I have always been impressed with Katy Perry, and now, I am even more so.

Zoefitness hasn’t been inactive, we never are.  People are busy, Coached Athletes and Team Athletes both.

Justin brought home the Big Buckle with an 8:26 at Leadville.  Great Job Justin, you’ve worked so hard this year from Texas Marathon Mountain Bike Champion to your Gold Buckle.  Your hard work and dedication to your sport has paid off immensely.

2014 Justin's Big Buckle

2014 Stefanie's NM Championship 1st Place SSStefanie not only brought home the Gold at the USA National Championship she brought home the 1st Place SS Championship at Cedro Peak for New Mexico.  Way to kick butt on the SS.  You sure do seem to do well, and have fun while bringing home the hardware!

2014 Kimmie at ITU in Germany_resizedKimmie represented Team Zoefitness at USA Triathlon National Championships in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and then, left from there to head over to Germany for the ITU Cross World Championships.

She sure does look good representing Team USA doesn’t she??

It was really cool, because she got to meet long term Zoefitness sponsor and good friend Kathy from Terra Firma while she was over there.

Since I have been back, I’m working desperately at getting up to that 5 hour base.  Last week, I managed 3 x 3 hour rides, one of them on the road.  This week, will be a 4 hour ride, and then, hopefully bump it up again.

I have 2 versions of the One Hit Wonder here in Winona, a couple of thousand feet of climbing, gravel roads, road, and trail.  It’s pretty sweet.  I’m back in the pool, with Labor Day not as much as I would like, and my run is at a solid 7 miles of slow, but remarkably great form!

It’s been a busy time, a busy, busy time.

I hope you’re staying out of trouble and remembering how to keep the rubber side down.
