When I Screw Up
I like to do it very well.
So well, it takes me a week to talk about it.
So last Tuesday I decided to really do it right.
I am toying with the idea of hosting an off road triathlon here in Winona. Great place for one, been thinking about routes.
I wanted to know what the distance was at Holzinger up the Quarry and Down the Cistern.
Started off in a great mood, going ‘fast’ in about 6 inches of fresh snow.
I have my XX2i Sunglasses on, I’m smiling, enjoying the outdoors, the ‘sunshine’, the workout.
I have one layer, my 2XU Sub Zero Thermal Tights, and my favorite 2XU top I use as a base layer.
I wasn’t always breaking track, it was hard work but not death.
Until I started coming down the Cistern.
Then, well, I had fear in my heart.
And Strength.
Coming down the Cistern was pretty treacherous. I was breaking track, it’s already narrow, I kept sliding, and I would be up to my waist in snow, trying to lift myself back up to ‘the trail’.
But it’s Winona, I thought about back tracking, I thought about going straight down, but my pride is too great.
Plus you know, I had to, just had to get that mileage to know if that loop was doable for a race.
Well, I got ‘er done.
I did not actually cry; even though I thought it may have been inevitable.
I felt worse after this than I did when I ran the 50 miles in Leadville, just to put it into perspective.
You’re right, it should not have taken so long, but the terrain mandated that. Thank God, I had decided to bring my poles, I thought the chance of sliding down the bluff was pretty great, and I was right; over and over and over again.
Last week was pretty much a wash on training.
I had come off a big block of riding in NM. Wanted to take a couple of days off to rest and recover.
Unfortunately it took me a couple of more days to rest and recover both physically and mentally from this experience.
New Mexico, as always, was divine!
Got in some great rides. A PR on the North Foothills Loop, from Montgomery.
Followed by 4:40 with La Luz climb and the Tram with Kimmie:
And a trip to White Mesa with Renee and Stefanie:
So been back at the Frozen Tundra for a week now; and already burned out of indoor workouts. To put it into perspective, it was -15 degrees this morning.
This week, I will be working on cadence on the bike, and getting some good Z4 sets; preparing for Spring Break and 10 days in NM.
Yesterday I had a great swim at 2500 yards, and no board got some 50’s in 2 x 50 at :55/ 2 x 50 at :50 and the real kicker 2 x 50 at :45. I hope I didn’t offend anyone with an HFS.
Today got 5 miles in at the indoor track: 44 laps total.
Quick Review of my XX2i Optics Glasses:
I love them.
First off, they are a sister company of Rudy Project. You know how much I love my Rudy’s.
They are super light, great UV protection! I wear them in NM in full sun, when I don’t want to change from my Rudy Racing Reds.
They come with 3 lenses, stickers, carrying case, strap, way more gear than Rudy Projects.
I wear them in MN to help block the glare of the sun and the snow.
They’re about 1/3rd of the cost of Rudy’s. So if you don’t want to spend the dough, then XX2i is the way to go!!
Hope you’re getting out and racing this weekend:
It’s the inaugural Lone Star XC race at Northshore in Dallas, a Zoefitness sponsored event!
Have fun and know I’m rolling in your honor!
