Apparently I am in the Wrong Business

I should be in the business just to make money….

Not.

Although that is a very nice side effect.

I’m in it more so people can find a new passion or tweak an old one, or just get faster.

I had an open dialogue with someone after swimming.

What I heard appalled me.

The 1st thing she told me was that her coach used to yell at her when she was late.

My response, “I am a coach, and there’s one thing I want  people to know;

when it comes to exercise, it’s better late than never”.

30 Minutes is better than NO minutes: 5 minutes is better than NO minutes.

And you’re paying me, yes, I may be disappointed, or I may make you barf, but I don’t need to yell at you or belittle you.

The conversation came up because we were both 30 minutes late to Master’s.  She got stuck in traffic, I got stuck on the computer, and dropping off forgotten stuff at school.  I also had my: oops!!

I went from this butt kicking workout to:  well, what’s the most amount of work I can get in in 30 minutes:  1750 for time; EZ: 30 minutes and some change.  I had a couple of delays; like I had to take my swim cap off, because it fell off my last 150.

Seriously.

People pay  money to get yelled at?!?

I heard of another experience where a coach yelled at their athlete to “Get on your bike and ride that thing”…

Seriously….

People  want to be respected, not ridiculed.  If I can’t teach you how to ride that thing, I will find someone who can.  Even I have my limitations but my resources are limitless.

The other thing she opened up to me was about her old Team.

Sounds more like a money racketeer.  A Team where they have clinics, seminars, teaching you how to ride better, but non of it’s for free.  I’m pretty sure they have to pay for their kits too.  So here are these members who represent a particular brand, and they have to pay for everything.

I was wondering why their “Team” never responded back when I offered to provide a free skills clinic to them.

I like to volunteer my services on a yearly basis, either through a skills clinic or through a beginner ride series.  Don’t get me wrong, I am also for hire.

Maybe I will make a client, maybe I won’t, but what’s a couple of hours of my time to give back to what gives me so much pleasure, to bring in one more person to the sport?

I guess, that’s why she’s not on that Team anymore.

I had another question come up at swimming:

1.6 Mile Swim in a race, 2.6k.

Well, if it were me, I wouldn’t want anything less than a 3500 yards going into it.  With nothing less than being able to pull a mile solid, straight through.  If you can do that you will survive that swim and come out of  the water feeling strong.

I had the best time last week.  I was back in Texas, and although I almost fell over 6 times while I was there, it was great to see my friends!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brings me to the next topic: ALTITUDE.

When I come down; I feel sluggish running and biking, running mostly.  That is why it’s best to live high and train low.

But I went to see Coach Tom at Flower Mound Fountain of Youth Master’s at the CAC.  He also coaches Irving Master’s and Irving Swimmers.  I love his style.  I was unbelievably faster in the pool.  Like, I surprised myself!  I was swimming my 100’s 15 seconds faster than I do.  It was cool!  Really Cool.

But what is important is that we all have a different response to altitude, and it’s really important to know what yours is.  In exercise and in Racing.

I am offering 2 camps this summer.

One in June and One in July: one will be 2 days, one will be 3 days.

Keep your eyes open.  They are set up specifically for Leadville Silver Rush and LT 100, periodization.  I don’t have the exact days, but keep your eyes posted.  I won’t be taking more than 10 people per camp.  Whether you are training specifically for a high altitude race this summer or fall, or you just want to come to learn more about altitude training, your body’s response to altitude and explore New Mexico, it will be the Camp of the season.

We will be riding in Albuquerque, and Santa Fe.

I can’t wait.

I should have the exact dates nailed down in the next few days.

I don’t want to sign out without giving giant Kudos to Collette Haney.  She is representing Team Zoefitness for Mountain Biking and Running.  I am also coaching her.

She pulled off a 3rd Place  finish in her 10k this weekend.  She ran a total of 15k.

I’ve been coaching her for only a couple of months…

She’s obviously following her plan, because she’s already faster than me.

Running, she’s always been faster than me on the bike, I don’t expect that to change any time soon.

Congratulations Collette, I’m so happy for you!!
