2013 Results and Notables:

As a member of the City of San Antonio’s Linear Creekway Parks Advisory Board for the last six years, I have helped guide and oversee the development of the linear park system that is being constructed by providing accessible pathways along creeks and rivers running through San Antonio, TX.  Following is a brief description of the program.

“The Linear Creekway Parks Development (Creekways) Program was begun in the late 1990’s under the leadership of former mayor Howard W. Peak and his colleagues on City Council with the vision of preserving floodplain land and utilizing the creekways of San Antonio for an interconnected system of hike and bike trails.  San Antonio voters have approved funding for the Creekways Program through the collection of a 1/8 cent sales tax in May 2000 ($20M), May 2005 ($45M) and November 2010 ($45M).  The Creekways Program receives input regarding acquisition and development of linear parks along major creeks, rivers and their tributaries from the Linear Creekway Parks advisory Board.  This board is comprised of 11 members, appointed by each City Council member and the Mayor.  Howard Peak, the mayoral appointee, currently serves as the chairman.  The ultimate program goal is to complete a city-wide, connected ring of approximately 116 miles of hike & bike trails primarily utilizing Leon Creek, Salado Creek and the Medina River

Through the Creekways Program, over 1,200 acres of property has been acquired and preserved and over 42 miles of trail has been constructed to-date.  The balance of funds from the 2005 election, as well as those from the 2010 election have been appropriated and approved in the adopted capital budget and provide for an additional 44 miles of trail.  The result will be a total of approximately 86 miles of trail projects along Salado Creek, Leon Creek, Medina River, San Antonio River, Huesta Creek, Huebner Creek, Olmos Creek and the Westside Creeks including Alazan, Apache, Martinez and San Pedro South.”

I have also served on the San Antonio-Bexar County MPO’s Bicycle Mobility Advisory Committee for 10 years now.  The Bicycle Mobility Advisory Committee (BMAC) was established by the San Antonio-Bexar County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) Transportation Policy Board in 1995.  The committee’s purpose is to improve bicycle mobility within the San Antonio-Bexar County MPO Study Area.  BMAC’s vision is for the region to be distinguished as a place where cyclists can safely travel on and off-road and cycling is recognized as a clean, healthy, and affordable form of transportation and recreation.  In 2000, there were 34 miles of bicycle facilities located throughout San Antonio including bike lanes, routes and paths.  Through 2012, there were approximately 242 miles of bicycle facilities throughout town, plus 100 miles of trails now accounted, and approximately 82 additional miles of bicycle facilities being proposed.
